About Us
Tiana Kubik
My mission is to empower families, schools, and communities to adopt educational practices that trust children to learn and place a strong emphasis on children's mental health. Let curiosity take the lead.
Who Am I?
I am a mom, wife, and business owner who has spent most of my adult life learning about how children learn and grow. For 10 years, I was an educator and worked with children in home and school settings.
Although my primary focus was the well being of children, it became overwhelmingly apparent that to be concerned with the wellbeing of a child is to be concerned with the wellbeing of that child's family and community. My goal of Empowering Children became a passion for empowering entire families.
Parents should feel the freedom to listen to the needs of their children and the courage to feel confident in their choices. Often this means going against the narratives that society tells us about what happiness looks like, what education looks like, and what parenting looks like. We have the power to choose our paths to help guide our children to choose their own paths.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Family Community Services from Michigan State University and a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from the Erikson Institute, in Chicago, IL. I was a teacher for Pre-K-Kindergarten for almost 10 years. My husband and I have worked side by side for 10 years running a children and family photography company. We have had both our kids in tow for the last 7 years. We have been homeschooling/unschooling our children since 2018.
The last year we have been exploring North America through living and traveling in a self converted 2016 Sprinter Van. Follow along with our unschooling and travel adventures on Instagram at @usalongtheway.
Why Self-Directed Education?
At every stage of my life, I have seen the benefits of children having control over their education. As an educator, I have seen this power in philosophies like Reggio Emilia and Waldorf. As a parent, I have witnessed it in my own children.
What is overwhelmingly apparent is that children who feel they have a choice will choose to be curious and that curiosity will always lead them to learn.
You do not have to choose to homeschool long term to enjoy the benefits of unschooling and self-directed education. Teaching your kids to follow their interests and establishing ways to push that interest and independence further is never a bad thing.
If you are looking to engage in unschooling/Self-Directed Education you are trying to achieve a culture of curiosity and independence within your family. This can only serve you and your child well in any educational setting.
