Family learning together

I am going to hit pause on talking about Deschooling for a second. Can we talk about the most common response to the idea of homeschooling?

The #1 response is some version of "I am not a teacher." or "I am not equipped to homeschool them."

This is usually accompanied by an explanation of how they couldn't possibly teach algebra, or science, or [insert subject here].

Here's the truth:

You do NOT have to teach to homeschool.

In self-directed education, your role shifts from "teacher" to "facilitator" and "resource provider." You're not standing at a whiteboard delivering lectures. Instead, you're:

  • Following your child's natural curiosity
  • Providing resources and opportunities for exploration
  • Learning alongside them
  • Connecting them with mentors and experts when needed
  • Creating an environment where learning happens naturally

Children are natural learners. They learned to walk, talk, and navigate their world without formal instruction. Self-directed education trusts that this innate drive to learn continues throughout childhood.

If you want to homeschool, there is a way - and it doesn't require you to become a certified teacher or expert in every subject.
